Carter’s slick mitts steal show against Argonauts
The Saskatchewan Roughriders treated their fans to some A.C./D.C., thereby electrifying the crowd.
Defensive end A.C. Leonard had a sack, a quarterback pressure and a forced fumble Saturday as the re-energized Roughriders stormed past the Toronto Argonauts 38-27 in Saturday’s CFL game at Mosaic Stadium.
But the unquestioned star of the show was D.C. — Duron Carter — who treated 33,350 eyewitnesses to a highlight-reel performance.
Carter snared nine Kevin Glenn passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns, the first scoring grab being a one-handed backhand gem from 18 yards away in the waning seconds of the first half.
The audience sat momentarily stunned before realizing that Carter had indeed caught the pass. A spirited debate quickly ensued as to whether any Roughrider of any era had made a finer reception.
The good names of Joey Walters, Weston Dressler, Don Narcisse, Ray Elgaard, Rhett Dawson, Jeff Fairholm and Hugh “Gluey Hughie” Campbell were mentioned after a simply spectacular showing by Carter.
Carter wasn’t the whole show — far from it — as the Roughriders enjoyed their most-balanced offensive performance of the season.
The league’s two senior statesmen — Glenn and quarterbacking counterpart Ricky Ray, both of whom were born in 1979 — performed in a manner that accelerated the aging processes of rival defensive backs.
Ray, who during the game set the Argos franchise mark in career passing yardage and attempts, threw three touchdown passes to help Toronto carry a 24-20 lead into the fourth quarter, displaying the unrivalled touch that makes him such a pleasure to watch.
Not to be outdone, Glenn overcame some early misfires and ultimately launched four touchdown passes for the second time this season.
The Canadian Football Hall of Fame-worthy signal-caller now has 11 scoring tosses in five games for a Roughriders team that eked out 16 touchdown passes all of last season.
