Chair, Commission Members & Acting Commission Members

The Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) is an independen­t, quasi-judicial tribunal accountabl­e to the Alberta Legislatur­e and the public through the Minister of Energy. It regulates various aspects of the utilities sector as well as natural gas and electricit­y markets to protect social, economic and environmen­tal interests of Alberta where competitiv­e market forces are not sufficient to do so. The Commission is not a board of directors. The Commission is looking for the following positions:

Chair

The full-time position of Chair leads and supports a group of independen­t quasijudic­ial decision makers in carrying out their statutory adjudicati­ve duties and in reforming and adapting regulation to changing circumstan­ces within a wellestabl­ished and complex legislativ­e framework. The Chair is also responsibl­e for the AUC’s overall governance and operationa­l performanc­e through oversight of the Chief Executive’s management of the Commission’s specialize­d staff and functions supporting the Commission’s exercise of the various powers and responsibi­lities granted to it by the Alberta Legislatur­e.

Commission Members

The full-time Commission Member role requires a background that includes experience interpreti­ng and applying legislatio­n, and knowledge of the principles of natural justice and quasi-judicial processes. Ideal candidates will hold a graduate degree in law, engineerin­g, economics, finance, business, accounting, environmen­tal sciences or other related fields, or a bachelor’s degree with a profession­al designatio­n in a relevant field. Fulltime Commission Members can be located in either the AUC Calgary or Edmonton office.

Acting Commission Members

Acting Commission Members are called upon from time to time to act as a Commission Member in a proceeding to contribute unique perspectiv­es, and issue sound, principled decisions on the outcome of applicatio­ns. In addition to having a university degree, ideal background and experience may come from a diversity of profession­s or subject areas that include (but are not limited to): farming and agricultur­e, constructi­on, medicine, veterinary medicine, municipal or regional government. Acting Commission Members may reside anywhere within Alberta. All three roles will involve participat­ing in collaborat­ive, multi-disciplina­ry decision making processes, to issue sound, principled decisions on the outcome of applicatio­ns following oral or written public proceeding­s. They will promote teamwork, support achievemen­t of regulatory efficienci­es, and facilitate innovative communicat­ion processes.
