Chair, Commission Members & Acting Commission Members
The Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) is an independent, quasi-judicial tribunal accountable to the Alberta Legislature and the public through the Minister of Energy. It regulates various aspects of the utilities sector as well as natural gas and electricity markets to protect social, economic and environmental interests of Alberta where competitive market forces are not sufficient to do so. The Commission is not a board of directors. The Commission is looking for the following positions:
Chair
The full-time position of Chair leads and supports a group of independent quasijudicial decision makers in carrying out their statutory adjudicative duties and in reforming and adapting regulation to changing circumstances within a wellestablished and complex legislative framework. The Chair is also responsible for the AUC’s overall governance and operational performance through oversight of the Chief Executive’s management of the Commission’s specialized staff and functions supporting the Commission’s exercise of the various powers and responsibilities granted to it by the Alberta Legislature.
Commission Members
The full-time Commission Member role requires a background that includes experience interpreting and applying legislation, and knowledge of the principles of natural justice and quasi-judicial processes. Ideal candidates will hold a graduate degree in law, engineering, economics, finance, business, accounting, environmental sciences or other related fields, or a bachelor’s degree with a professional designation in a relevant field. Fulltime Commission Members can be located in either the AUC Calgary or Edmonton office.
Acting Commission Members
Acting Commission Members are called upon from time to time to act as a Commission Member in a proceeding to contribute unique perspectives, and issue sound, principled decisions on the outcome of applications. In addition to having a university degree, ideal background and experience may come from a diversity of professions or subject areas that include (but are not limited to): farming and agriculture, construction, medicine, veterinary medicine, municipal or regional government. Acting Commission Members may reside anywhere within Alberta. All three roles will involve participating in collaborative, multi-disciplinary decision making processes, to issue sound, principled decisions on the outcome of applications following oral or written public proceedings. They will promote teamwork, support achievement of regulatory efficiencies, and facilitate innovative communication processes.
TheAUC encourages applications from all qualified women and men from rural and urban areas, including persons with disabilities, members of visible minorities, and indigenous persons.
