THE BEAT GOES ON

-

Oneof the first highlights of the fall concert season is the I Love

the ’90s tour, with Vanilla Ice, Salt N Pepa, Rob Base, Young MC and Biz Markie appearing on Sept. 13 at Winsport Arena. But those who love other decades will also be well served. Fans of the 1970s in general and disco in particular will be enthused to see

Boney M at the Grey Eagle Resort & Casino on Sept. 22; the 1980s are well-represented by Gary Numan (Nov. 24 at Commonwealth Bar & Stage) and ’70s-holdover Foreigner (Oct. 11 at Jubilee Auditorium). Fans of music of a more recent vintage get breakout artists from the oughts like

Feist (Sept. 27-29 at Bella Concert Hall) and Arcade Fire (Oct. 12 at Scotiabank Saddledome), while newcomers Daniela Andrade (Oct. 3 at The Gateway) and Ralph (Sept. 20 at The Palomino) hope to build a following that will demand their appearances decades down the road.

Those whose fandom is constricted less by time than by genre will find solace in the city’s many folk clubs. Mainstay John Wort Hannam makes a quartet of appearances—Jan. 26 at the Calgary Folk Club, Feb. 3 at Saturday Night Special, May 12 at the Bow Valley Music Club, and April 13 at Fish Creek Concerts for his annual ALS fundraiser “Songs for Ken”— while raucous west coasters Tequila

Mockingbird Orchestra play just one night—Jan. 27—at the Nickelodeon Music Club.

Finally, the hep cats of jazz won’t be disappointed. TD Jazz’s season starts with a pair of luminaries in concert: Hudson, featuring drummer Jack DeJohnette (Oct. 17 at Jack Singer Concert Hall), and pianist

Ramsey Lewis (Nov. 17).
