Eaton design stands out
While functionality ranks high on the wish list for most house hunters, many people appreciate spaces with architectural interest, as well.
The Eaton welcomes eye-pleasing details into a floor plan that fits the needs of large families. This four-bedroom 2,412-square-foot model by Excel Homes is presented as a show home in HillCrest, a new community on the southwest end of Airdrie by Apex Land.
Keeping things simple can work well for some bonus rooms. But a design with personality, especially when done well, can make such a gathering space all the more inviting. With the simple but successful use of an angled ceiling and two large skylights, the Eaton makes this a bonus room people remember.
The bonus room is central on the second floor, creating a winged effect with the master bedroom and its accessory spaces on one end and three secondary bedrooms, a full bathroom, and laundry room on the other. One of the secondary bedrooms has a walk-in closet and the rest have spacious wall closets.
The tray style ceiling design in the master bedroom is another subtle but worthwhile detail used to elevate the interest of the space. Through one door, the master bedroom links to both the walkin closet and ensuite. This ensuite isn’t just for getting ready in the morning, but it’s easy to imagine it as a place people will want to escape to. It has dual vanities beneath a full-width mirror, large shower with a glass door, and an elegant free-standing tub under a window.
Catering to the large family this home supports, the laundry room is generously sized. It starts with a wall of white wire shelves for storing laundry essentials and linens, and moves to a space where multiple people can load and unload from the front-load washer and dryer without feeling cramped.
The home has a two-car front attached garage with an additional bay on one side. For families with two vehicles, the bonus bay can be used for a variety of purposes, including as a workshop or for storing equipment for seasonal activities, such as kayaks or snowboards.
The garage meets the home through a sunken mud room featuring built-ins with coat hangers and space to store items such as backpacks and winter accessories. Adjacent to the mud room, the foyer is large, letting multiple people enter the home and remove their jackets and boots with the elbow room they need.
Along the rear-facing main floor wall, the great room is 14 feet three inches by 12 feet 10 inches, pro- viding plenty of space for several pieces of large furniture. Its focal point is a box-shaped gas fireplace surrounded in full-height tile.
Adjacent to the great room is a dining area with a door that steps out to a back deck.
The L-shaped kitchen is centred by a large island with a sink and extended eating bar that comfortably seats three people. One side of the island has a built-in feature that stores 30 bottles of wine.
The appliances are stainless steel, including a chimney-style hoodfan and fridge with double doors.
Behind the kitchen, a walk-in pantry sits across from a work station, where the show home is staged with a desk and chair. Here, one of the children in the family can polish off homework while being within earshot of their parents putting the final touches on dinner.
The show home displays a developed basement with an additional bedroom and bathroom, along with a rec area, games room, mechanical room and undeveloped storage space.
