Cooler days, hot makeup

- ALEESHA HARRIS

Deep, berry hues are always a good idea in the wintertime. But this season, runways showcased some decidedly less obvious makeup trends (ahem, pastel eyeliners, we’re looking at you!).

Oz Zandiyeh, a Vancouverbased makeup artist, dishes details on the cool season’s hottest trends.

Q How would you sum up the “mood” of fall-winter 2017 beauty?

A The mood could be likened to female empowerment. Designers wanting to celebrate strong, powerful women gave way to key artists creating looks full of shapes and colour that made very subtle political statements celebrating strength and femininity. Bold trends such as lived-in lips, full lashes and wearing a combination of strong eyes and lips were shown on many a runway.

Q There was a lot of “natural” beauty on runways. Is no-makeup makeup officially one of the biggest beauty trends for fall?

A Yes, It’s definitely one of them. It’s an impactful look without being in your face. It shows restraint but also confidence. It’s ultrafeminine, but makes a statement of strength.

Q We’ve seeing coloured eyeshadow, liner and even mascara on the season’s runways. Is this something we can all try?

A We live in a time where there are no longer rules for what can/ should be worn. I feel that there’s a way of applying certain trends to maximize and complement our features, but this season’s looks are all about being fearless. Mixing a bold eye and lip or wearing one strong statement colour and keeping everything else natural.
