The Calgary police homicide unit continues to investigate a shooting that left one man dead early Saturday morning.

Emergency crews were called to the 4600 block of Bowness Road N.W. at about 5:30 a.m. for reports of a man in medical distress.

Police say when they arrived, they found a man in his 40s with critical injuries as the result of a shooting. He was taken to hospital, where he died a short time later.

Staff-Sgt. Kevin Dyrgas said police believe the shooting was targeted. No one is in custody in connection with the incident.

“We don’t know who the offender is,” said Dyrgas. “It’s not a random incident.”

A woman was taken in for questioning from the shooting scene, which Dyrgas said was on the side of Bowness Road.

Police had the road between 45th Street and 46th Street cordoned off with crime scene tape Saturday morning.

Dyrgas said investigators are talking to witnesses and canvassing businesses in the area.

A resident who lives nearby said she heard a gunshot around 5:30 a.m.

“I heard this terrible bang,” said Sandra Craft. “It sounded like a gunshot.”

She said she heard noises across the street after that.

“I heard a woman’s voice,” Craft said. “There was a couple of voices, quite loud.”

She added it makes her worried to know a fatal shooting happened on the block.

The identity of the victim is expected to be released after an autopsy is completed early this week.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact police or Crime Stoppers.

The death is the city’s 19th homicide of 2017.
