Secondary suite process shameful
Re: Councillors call for secondary suite submissions without personal details, Nov. 7
The application for a basement suite involving the installation of a stove was well thought out and would save Alberta Health thousands of dollars in expenses.
A caring family wanted to create a multi-generational residence with practicality where live-in caregivers could be on the premises full time to care for a double leg amputee.
Two of our elected councillors considered it unacceptable and another hinted to include a caveat of a residency requirement time for approval. I was left wondering when the officials would get pulled away from the council table and be put in the sandbox.
The lack of compassion and empathy tendered by elected officials is incomprehensible. Furthermore, the desire to ignore dignity and humility for further applicants is a regressive comprehension.
Personal details are part and parcel of submissions for a secondary suite to be considered as the law stands today.
Council should either get new legislation on the books, change their attitudes or find new jobs. Embarrassing a family and shaming handicapped people is not Calgarian tradition. Rork Hilford, Calgary
