Access Calgary difficult to access

-

My husband had almost his entire right leg amputated on Feb. 15 for bone cancer. We received and completed two applications for Access Calgary (use of HandiBus) while he was in hospital from Jan. 30 to July 10. Medical components of the form were completed by the required qualified person. The application was to be good for six months.

To our amazement, another form arrived this week; the third application in nine months. My husband is to complete four of eight pages, and have a medical form completed again, at his own cost. Again, this application is to expire in six months IF they accept his application.

What is most offensive is that they want to interview him to determine his eligibility and the review of the forms, including the medical form, and the interview is conducted by non-medical, non-licensed professionals.

He and many, many others forced to use this system are not expected to improve, will never improve, and yet they are forced to undergo this humiliating and expensive paperwork fiasco and then present themselves for an “interview.” And repeat that process every six months.

It is time to stop taking advantage of the disadvantaged. I assure you life with only one leg is complicated enough without having to endure such humiliations. It is time to change how you do things and allow those clients who will never improve to have lifetime use of Access Calgary. Diana McCall, Calgary
