GATHER ’ROUND IN THE PORTER
Bright, spacious Legacy home is great for entertaining, whether it’s friends or the family
Whether it’s to binge watch a series on Netflix, take in the hockey game or meet for a round of Monopoly, every family needs a place to hang out.
Just as the kitchen and great room can do this for guests, the bonus room is where the household connects.
The Porter model by Trico Homes does this well. Its welcoming bonus room measures 15 feet six inches by 16 feet — enough space for a well-sized sectional, chairs, a coffee table and a big TV.
Esthetics also play a role — ceiling features an attractive traystyle design.
The bonus room also functions as a layer of privacy. Its central location separates the rear-facing master bedroom from two secondary bedrooms that overlook the front yard.
The master bedroom is accessorized for a spacious walk-in closet and an ensuite set up to be both a functional place to start the day and a soothing escape. It has full-length mirror over dual vanities, with plenty of counter space for two people to comfortably use. There’s also a large glass-encased shower with tile and a deep soaker tub.
The Porter is a 2,121-squarefoot front-drive model that’s presented as a show home in Legacy, a southeast Calgary community master-planned by West Creek Developments. It has 121 hectares of developer-protected environmental reserve, 15 kilometres of pathways, a community garden and a high school that’s expected to open in autumn 2018.
On the main level, the Porter is open-concept and full of sunshine. Natural light comes through several large windows along the rear wall. This not only benefits the adjacent great room and dining area, but spreads to the kitchen as well.
These areas combine to create a warm, inviting space to entertain. It’s easy to imagine the natural progression from gathering in the kitchen to enjoying a good meal at the dinner table then relaxing by the gas fireplace, flanked by tall windows.
The kitchen is an L-shaped orientation and designed to be both eye-catching and practical. It has cabinets with glass fronts, a fullheight backsplash and stainless steel appliances including a wall oven and chimney-style hood fan. Its island is substantial and has a sink with a pullout sprayer and extended eating bar.
There’s also a handy walkthrough pantry that steps into a mud room that accesses the attached two-car garage. This feature makes it convenient to haul groceries in from the trunk of the car and put them away.
Another area of the home designed to pull in sunlight is the front foyer. The door has glass and is flanked by windows, and there’s a transom window above. There’s a window on the side wall, too.
The back half of the main floor seems more open than many designs of this kind. One reason for this is the placement of the staircase. Rather than taking up square footage from the primary spaces, it’s just off the foyer.
The show home also has a developed walkout basement complete with a large rec area, additional bedroom and full bathroom.
