Firefighters’ New Year’s Eve gala to aid Burn Centre, charities

- JIM FISHER Jim Fisher, president and firefighter Calgary Firefighters Burn Treatment Society

Most Calgarians do not have to contemplate what it would be like to live with a burn injury. For those affected themselves, who had a loved one suffer a burn injury or have been involved in the treatment of these devastating injuries, they know the importance of the delicate process involved.

The Calgary Firefighters Burn Treatment Society has been in operation for almost 40 years with the goal of ensuring the best possible outcomes for the people of Calgary and surrounding area. While we ensure the community is kept as safe as possible in our day-to-day work as firefighters, we volunteer our time away from the job to ensure we have a world-class burn centre in our own backyard. To date, we have raised $8.8 million to ensure that quality of care here in Calgary.

One priority identified by Dr. Duncan Nickerson, medical director of the Calgary Firefighters Burn Treatment Centre, was the need for a skin resurfacing laser. This new technology, which assists in the reduction of wound scarring, would allow our burn centre to employ the most current and high-calibre care in the treatment of burns. We are working to make the purchase of the laser a reality.

To raise funds for this endeavour, we came up with the idea of a Calgary Firefighters New Year’s Gala. This “party of the year” takes place at the Hyatt Regency on Dec. 31, and you will not want to miss it!

As firefighters, we have a history of supporting our community in many ways, and we wanted to continue this tradition to the best of our abilities. To further that tradition, we partnered with the Calgary Herald Christmas Fund. It gives us the opportunity to raise money from the gala for the Burn Centre and 12 other worthy charities from across the city. We hope this festive event can bring our city together to celebrate the incredible generosity this great city is capable of while ringing in the New Year in style.

The Calgary Firefighters Burn Treatment Society and the rest of Calgary’s firefighters hope that you will join us in ringing in the New Year For more details, visit www.cfbts.org
