IT’S A BRAND NEW YEAR, BABY

Infant born 12 seconds past midnight

Calgary welcomed its New Year’s baby just seconds after midnight.

Remington James Muir, born to parents Amy and Tyler Muir, was introduced to the world just 12 seconds into 2018 at Rockyview General Hospital.

The Muirs said they are excited to welcome their fourth child, who weighed just under nine pounds at birth.

The family from Cayley, about 80 kilometres south of Calgary, had to make the drive into the city, but Amy said her experience at the hospital was great, thanks to the staff.

“I was really nervous to come into the city and ... they were unbelievable. Every single person,” she said.

The Muirs never thought they would have the New Year’s baby, but Remington arrived after more than 40 hours of labour.

“My water broke on the 30th and then it was a long trek into 12 o’clock on the 1st,” Amy said.

“We were told it was his shoulders that didn’t allow him to come through,” added Tyler.

Despite not believing they were going to have a New Year’s baby, Tyler said that back in February a psychic predicted how the birth would go.

“She said we would have a little boy conceived in 2017 and born in 2018,” said Tyler. “But when you go into labour 48 hours before the new year, I was like, ‘yeah, that’s not going to happen.’”

Remington is also a lucky boy, with three older siblings — 13-yearold Teagan, 10-year-old Jake and three-year-old Mae — who are “stoked” to have him.
