TV drama Tin Star to hold casting call in Calgary

- ERIC VOLMERS

Producers behind the dark British-Canadian series Tin Star are putting out an open casting call for extras.

In fact, it’s very open. People of all ethnicities and ages, from five to 85, are invited to attend tryouts on Sunday at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Calgary University, 2373 Banff Trail N.W.

The first season aired on Sky Atlantic in Britain and Amazon Prime in the U.S. last September, but is still not available in Canada.

It stars Oscar nominee Tim Roth and Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks. Both are expected to return for the second season, which will be filmed in and around Calgary beginning in February.

It’s not expected to wrap until August.

Season 1 was shot in various Alberta locations, including Morley, High River, Dorothy, Drumheller, Moose Mountain and in Calgary’s new $28-million film centre.

The plot revolved around Police Chief Jim Worth, a former London detective played by Roth who leaves big-city policing for a seemingly peaceful life with his family in the Canadian Rockies.

But his troubled past follows him, with tragic results.

A big oil company, led by the mysterious Mrs. Bradshaw (Hendricks) seems to have overrun the town and may or may not be behind a sudden surge of mayhem that erupts, much of it directed at the Worth clan.

The violence unleashes the boozy Jack Devlin, who is either Worth’s alter ego or simply the darkness that bubbles up in the family man whenever he consumes alcohol.

Producers are keeping tightlipped about plot points for Season 2, although the first reportedly ended with a cliff hanger involving Roth’s character.

Sunday’s daylong open casting call will take place from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
