Sex offender banned from campus
Faced manslaughter conviction in 2015
One of three youths charged with human trafficking — in a case where a woman says she was held for days as a sex slave in a downtown apartment — has a previous manslaughter conviction.
The teen, who can’t be named, appeared briefly in youth court Friday.
Lawyer Mary Brebner, who appeared on behalf of defence counsel Will Willier, asked that the case be adjourned two weeks to join the teen up with the other two youth accused.
He faces charges that include human trafficking, sexual assault and unlawful confinement in connection with an incident last month.
On Dec. 13, a woman entered a downtown Calgary business on 5th Avenue S.W. asking for help, saying she’d escaped from a nearby apartment where, for the previous five days, she’d been held against her will and forced to perform sexual acts with more than 10 men.
Warrants were issued for the three youth and an adult female, who were arrested just days before Christmas.
The youth in court Friday was just 13 years old when he took part in the robbery and stabbing of a homeless man in June 2014.
Gabriel Okeynan, 45, was stabbed to death outside Marlborough Mall by the teen, as his older friend kicked the victim and the pair robbed him.
He was sentenced to the equivalent of 33 months — which is three months shy of the maximum youth sentence for manslaughter — after pleading guilty in October 2015.
His accomplice was convicted of manslaughter and robbery after trial.
Both had originally been charged with second-degree murder.
The youth has been ordered detained.
A second male teenager remains in custody pending a bail hearing, while a female youth has been released.
Jessica Nyome Louise Vinje, 29, was also charged with human trafficking and other offences.
Vinje was applying for bail on Friday afternoon before provincial court Judge John Bascom.
