Double treat as Pikes to perform and record at Studio Bell

-

Hard to believe it’s been 30 years since their debut but The Northern Pikes have been steadily creating music these past three decades. Last year, the group embarked on their first national tour in over 10 years to celebrate and promote a special anniversary edition of their debut album, Big Blue Sky.

Following a sold- out show at the King Eddy in November, the band is coming back to Studio Bell for a sneak peek of tracks off their upcoming record along with some old fan favourites. The rock group, which formed in Saskatoon in 1984, will play at the National Music Centre on Feb. 10 at 8 p.m.

That’s just a warm-up for the group, which will also record their next album at Studio Bell.

“After visiting Studio Bell in November and seeing the National Music Centre’s incredible collection, we knew we had to come back to perform and we knew we had to come back and make a record,” said Jay Semko, singer-songwriter and bassist.

Tickets ($ 30) for The Northern Pikes Live at Studio Bell are on sale at studiobell.ca/whats-on. NMC members get a discount on tickets and have access to a special live oral history show on The Northern Pikes, Feb. 9.

In November, Dirty Catfish Brass Band brought its New Orleans-inspired sound to The Palomino as part of a Western Canada tour. Now, to kick off its winter tour, the horn-heavy 10-piece collective returns Jan. 26. It’s loud, raucous and always infectious fun when DCBB cooks up its street swing sound. Tickets are $10 in advance available at or www.myshowpass. com

It sounds like the start of a joke: what do you get when you cross a ventriloquist with a comedian? A fun night out that benefits youth.

Yu Laugh features ventriloquist Dave Pendleton on Jan. 19 at Centre Street Church (3900 2nd St. N.E.) He’ll be joined by Canadian comedian Leland Klassen, who has been featured on the Comedy Network, CBC Television, Star TV, Global and Discovery Kids.

Proceeds will help support Youth Unlimited Calgary, which runs faithbased programming and mentorship. Tickets are $27 (regular), $37 (premium seat) and are available online through www.eventbrite.ca.
