MONTGOMERY IN SYMONS GATE

An open concept with cosier formats

- JOSH SKAPIN

While an open design has its benefits, a cosier format can make some spaces thrive.

Such is the case with the bonus room in the Montgomery show home by Morrison Homes.

While many central bonus rooms have nothing between them and the other rooms on the second floor, this has a wall facing the hallway, with entrance points featuring bulkheads on both sides.

Seating would face this wall, which in the show home is mounted with a TV.

The feeling this creates is more akin to a theatre. It’s easy to imagine this bonus room used for a family movie night, watching the Academy Awards, or enjoying the big game.

Like many young families will agree, the bonus room also becomes a play space. With this wall, the mess that comes from a toddler’s toys and books are tucked away.

The Montgomery — a 2,043-square-foot, move-up model with a front-attached, two-car garage — is displayed in Symons Gate. This northwest Calgary community by Brookfield Residential sits near a handful of useful amenities, such as Symons Valley Ranch, Creekside Shopping Centre, and both a Walmart and Loblaws City Market in nearby Sage Hill.

While many central bonus rooms provide a buffer between the master bedroom and children’s bedrooms, this takes the winged approach one step further.

One of the bonus room walls is shared with the master bedroom, but on the opposite side there’s an open space with a stylish coffered ceiling that provides access to the laundry room, full bathroom, and both secondary bedrooms.

In an uncommon but cosy approach, the secondary bedrooms, located side- by- side, are both sunken.

Two small stairs pull these sleep spaces slightly off the same level as the rest of the second floor.

The master bedroom is located along the rear wall and measures 12 feet eight inches by 15 feet two inches. It has an ensuite and walkin closet that are both accessed through the same entryway.

The ensuite boasts dual vanities under a full-width mirror, a deep soaker tub, and glass- encased shower with an eye-catching tile pattern.

On the main level, the design revolves around the central Lshaped kitchen.

Its colourful, stylishly patterned full-height tile backsplash is a focal point.

The kitchen also has an abundance of cabinets and stainless steel appliances, including a chimney-style hood fan.

Its island has a sink and extended eating bar that seats three people. On both sides, there’s a small set of shelves with glass fronts.

Also featured in the kitchen is a large corner walk-through pantry that reaches a mud room that accesses the garage.

The dining area and great room sit along the rear- facing wall, which has well-sized windows bringing in a generous amount of natural light. In the show home, the great room is presented with a contemporary elongated electric fireplace.
