Photographers, writers receive nominations

It doesn’t have the glitz of the Oscar nominations but the annual announcement of who is up for awards at the annual Alberta Magazine Publishers Association conference is watched closely in certain quarters.

“It’s a gratifying pat on the back from one’s peers and a chance to celebrate the talented freelancers who contribute to the magazine,” said Bruce Weir, editor of Swerve, after learning the magazine is up for 14 awards. “The nominations are also a nod to our art director, Brent Morrison, and Going Out editor, Jon Roe, who work tirelessly on each issue.”

Morrison received nominations for cover design and feature design. He is joined by Calgary Herald/Calgary Sun photographers Jim Wells and Leah Hennel, whose work in landscape photography and photo essay, respectively, was highlighted.

FREELANCERS

The remaining nominations were claimed by freelancers, including longtime Swerve writers Rita Sirignano (with Melody Baker), John Gilchrist and Karen Hines. Christina Frangou’s chronicle of the first man in Alberta to undergo a medically assisted death is in the running in the long feature category and Trina Moyles’ piece about life in a fire tower is nominated for Alberta Story.

George Webber, also a longtime Swerve contributor, received two nods in the photo essay category. Fellow freelancer Colin Way is up for an award in the portrait photography category. Rounding out the visual nominations are illustrator s Drew Shannon and Hayden Maynard.

The awards will be handed out March 8 at the Carriage House Inn.
