Calgary housing industry in the spotlight

- JOSH SKAPIN

Builders, renovators, and community developers from Calgary lead all cities with 29 per cent of the nods in a national competition honouring the top performances in housing last year.

Winners of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association 2018 National Awards for Housing Excellence will be announced during the association’s 75th national conference on March 23 in Victoria, B.C.

Calgary-based companies carry the pace with 53 of the 183 finalists.

“Our judges have the difficult task of narrowing down the best in Canadian new homes, renovations, and communities,” says CHBA CEO Kevin Lee. “They give each entry careful consideration, and bring their own expertise to the table when discussing candidates.

“Our process makes it a huge honour to win—every finalist should be extremely proud.”

The Design Excellence and Mar- keting Excellence awards are the top honours in the competition. They’ll go to the company with the strongest showing in the individual new home and marketing categories, respectively.

Calgary’s Brookfield Residential earned both titles in 2016. Brookfield, which is both a home builder and land developer, and Kon-strux Developments pace all companies in finalists from the Calgary area with 10 nods each this year.

Two of Brookfield’s nods, the Lavello 2 and the Tevera, are shortlisted in the category for Detached Home - Production, 2,501 to 3,00 square feet.

Its other entries in line for new home awards include the Belvedere III, the Hudson II, and the Corsano.

For the top community honour, all finalists are from Alberta. In the Calgary area, Cranston’s Riverstone by Brookfield, located in the city’s southeast quadrant, and Harmony in Springbank by Bordeaux Developments and Qualico Communities, are up for the Community Development Award.

Last year was memorable for both communities. Harmony was crowned New Community of the Year and Community of the Year-Calgary Region at the Cal- gary region SAM (Sales and Marketing) Awards, and Cranston’s Riverstone won the Community Development category at the 2017 CHBA-Alberta Awards of Excellence in Housing.

The other three finalists for the Community Development Award are from Edmonton and all by Brookfield.

For renovation awards, Konstrux is in the running in eight individual categories, including two entries for Kitchen - under $50,000 honour.

Beyond Kon-strux, Calgary representation in the renovation categories includes eight finalists from Ultimate Renovations and one from Empire Custom Homes.

For new home awards from Calgary, along with Brookfield’s finalists, Homes by Avi is well-represented, as well. The builder has six entries in the running for new

home honours, four of which are from the inner-city development Duke at Mission by Avi Urban.

Homes by Avi will also compete for new home awards with submissions dubbed Carrington Hawthorne, and Tuscany Rosedale.

Other Calgary-based contenders for new home awards include the Cayenne by NuVista Homes, Parkside in Highland Park by Treehouse Developments, Private Residence - Watermark at Bearspaw by Astoria Homes, The Rosemont by Ashton Luxury Living, Magnolia by Trickle Creek Custom Homes, and a private residence by Lupi Luxury Homes. Stepper Homes has two new home award finalists with the Pacific and the Bowen.

In the interior decorating class, Calgary is again in the lead, with three of five finalists — including the Stampede Rotary Dream Home. Shortlisted for the interior decorating title are the Sereno by Brookfield, and Calgary Stampede Dream Home, and Mahogany MacIntosh, both by Homes by Avi.
