Affidavit details lavish lifestyles of those who hired ex-cop
Three officers on trial in bribery case
It’s something straight out of Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous.
A lavish wedding where a Calgary billionaire hired Katy Perry to perform, deliveries of gold bars to Calgary banks and a private jet to the Bahamas.
Those were just some of the events detailed in an affidavit made an exhibit in the trial of three Calgary police officers accused in a corruption case.
One of the three accused, Anthony Braile, swore an affidavit Nov 15, 2015, explaining the work he and others did for former Calgary policeman Steve Walton.
In the document, released to the media Tuesday by Justice Bryan Mahoney, Braile explained how Akele Taylor was under surveillance at the request of her exboyfriend, Ken Carter.
Braile also discussed other work the man who allegedly spearheaded the surveillance, Walton, did as part of his security business.
In the sworn statement, Braile spoke of being paid by Carter to tail Taylor in an effort to find incriminating evidence against her for use in a child-custody battle.
Braile also spoke of other work he did for Walton, including taking part in a security detail for the lavish 2013 wedding of Calgary billionaire Bill Gallacher in the Bahamas at a resort where the James Bond Film Casino Royale was purportedly filmed.
Crown prosecutor Leah Boyd told Mahoney she would be calling Gallacher as a witness Feb. 21.
It’s the Crown’s theory Walton hired the three accused to conduct surveillance on Taylor, the former girlfriend of wealthy Calgarian Carter.
Braile, Bryan Morton and Bradford McNish face charges of bribery and unlawfully using a police computer system.
Braile, who has since been fired from the Calgary Police Service over an unrelated incident, faces an additional charge of criminal harassment and McNish an extra allegation of breach of trust by a public officer, while Morton faces both additional accusations.
The charges stem from incidents between Aug. 11, 2012, and 2015.
In his affidavit, Braile said he was paid $1,000 a day to take part in surveillance on Taylor.
And he spoke about other work he was involved in, including making bank deliveries for Carter.
“In and around March 2013, I assisted Steve Walton in carrying four, large carry-on suitcases filled with gold bars to three or four different banks in Calgary,” Braile said in the document, obtained by one of Taylor’s lawyers for the purpose of civil litigation.
Braile said he was told a single brick at the time was worth $58,000.
He said that around the same time, Carter and several others, including Walton and Walton’s wife, Heather, flew to the Bahamas in a private jet.
Braile also said he was part of a security detail Walton put together for Gallacher’s wedding in the Bahamas.
The Waltons and Carter are scheduled to go to trial in September. Braile, Morton and McNish’s trial continues Wednesday.
