Hoping to address continued student growth in all grades, the Calgary Board of Education is on track to open one K-9 school this spring along with a new high school in the deep south in the fall.

Griffith Woods School will open April 3, serving K-9 students in the southwest communities of Springbank Hill and Discovery Ridge, while Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School will open for grades 10 to 12 students in the community of Seton by September.

Dany Breton, CBE superintendent of facilities and environmental services, said after the opening of three new schools last fall, the CBE is continuing expansions and modernizations of aging inner-city schools this year.

Lord Beaverbrook High School has completed expansions to its culinary, commercial foods and cosmetology labs, and is starting to transition students into an expanded autobody and woodworking shop. Work is expected on a new heavy machinery facility and pre-engineering lab later this year.

Meanwhile, James Fowler is continuing renovations in its Career and Technology Studies centre, where automotive, building trades and communication technology shops are located. Work is also proceeding in an Arts-Centred Learning room with the installation of a new elevator to allow wheelchair access to the dance and music rooms on the lower level of the school.

Projects that may go ahead in 2019, depending on provincial funding, include a new high school on the north central edge of the city and modernizations at Forest Lawn High School.
