LAKESIDE LOTTERY HOME

Foothills Hospital the ultimate winner

- JOSH SKAPIN

Towering ceilings, an upscale kitchen, extensive wine cellar, and an ensuite that looks like the spa from a luxury resort. These are just some of the eye-catching features in the grand prize of the latest Foothills Hospital Home Lottery.

The home by Calbridge Homes has more than 5,600 square feet of developed and fully furnished space, four bedrooms, and 4.5 bathrooms. It’s located in the southeast Calgary community of Mahogany by Hopewell Residential and has a private dock that backs onto 25-hectare Mahogany Lake.

The home is valued at $2.4 million and comes with $100,000 in cash.

Along with the Calbridge home, the Early Bird prize is a $1.5 million home at Spring Creek in Canmore that’s packaged with $50,000 in cash. Other prizes include vehicles, vacations and leisure prizes.

What makes the grand prize special starts at the exterior, says Eelco Kleinleugenmors, architectural planning and development with Calbridge.

“The way that lot sits on the water and oriented toward the main street, it’s just such a stunning location and the house has such superb exposure. It’s absolutely beautiful,” says Kleinleugenmors. “From the outside, you just want to step in.”

Past the foyer, with typical ceiling height, “you step into the rest of the house and it just opens up in front of your eyes,” he adds.

“You see the view of the lake side-to-side and the ceilings just soar. To be able to create a house that has that type of volume, expansive living areas, and sprawling ceiling heights, yet make it feel comfortable, livable, and so people want to stay in the space, I think is truly remarkable.”

Ceiling heights on the main level range from 14 feet to 22 feet. Beams are included to further the visual interest.

“Volume and ceiling height is always nice but there’s just something about bringing it down and balancing the volume with some neat details,” Kleinleugenmors says.

Its spacious kitchen, with fully customized cabinets, is another high note.

“The island is large, bordering on 14 feet in width, and that’s lots of cabinetry along the range wall, so it’s a big, open, expansive kitchen,” says Kleinleugenmors. “The ceiling height just brings it down a bit, so it’s intimate.

“Having the sliding door open to a covered deck with a fire bowl just adds that little layer of intimacy and excitement and outdoor living,” he adds.

There’s a contemporary wine cellar showcased behind glass that reaches from the lower level to the dining area. Kleinleugenmors says the lot lets the builder “explore different levels” in its design.

“As you step into the house, you can see to the upper floor where the master bedroom is, you can even get a glimpse of the elevated bonus room,” he adds.

“Tying all sorts of levels together was a big focus for this house. We thought we have this beautiful opportunity ...why don’t we do something with wine that really speaks to lounging in the basement, shooting a game of pool, and then also a nice dining experience with friends and family.”

All wine storage in the home, combined, supports more than 200 bottles.

The master bedroom and its accessory spaces is the star of the second level. A white brick wall provides a visual separation between a spacious walk-in closet on one side the sleep space and ensuite on the other.

“It’s a really neat ensuite,” says Kleinleugenmors.

“We tried something a little different with the wet room, where we intentionally placed the tub inside of an over-sized shower. And what gives it that resort or spa-like feel is the wood floor overtop of the tile base. The wood ... they actually use on cruise ships. It’s the perfect wood to use in humid conditions. It adds some texture to it, a different colour. That, in combination with the glass and taller ceilings, the transom window above that lets the natural light in, just makes for a really relaxing ambience in that ensuite.”

Rochelle Cote Interior Design provided the home’s interior design, which takes on a modern industrial theme.

“It starts at the front entry with the Cabbiavoli hardwood in the herringbone pattern and then going through metal glass doors,” says Rochelle Cote, principal and senior designer. “Those were really unique and we tried to follow those metal glass doors through into the ensuite.”

“I like the black throughout the house, and the accent colour was unique for us,” she adds. “It’s that rich, dark green colour, which is definitely a nice contrast with all the black and white.”

The firm chose to go with feature paint over wallpaper, “which softens the contrast,” Cote says.

Tickets to the Foothills Hospital Home Lottery are $100 each, or available in packages of three for $250, five for $375, or eight for $500.

They’re available at the Calbridge show home on 262 Marine Drive S.E., the Canmore show home at 39 Creekside Mews, or through outlets at the Foothills Medical Centre, Peter Lougheed Centre, and Rockyview General Hospital.
