HILLCREST’S NATURAL LIGHT ACCENTUATES SPACIOUS DESIGN

Townhome boasts a large great room and towering views out back

- JOSH SKAPIN

While the measurements of the Hillcrest’s great room are substantial, its design helps it seem even larger.

At 13 feet 11 inches by 13 feet, the welcoming sitting area is a size reminiscent of a similar space in some laned single-family homes. But with an eight-foot sliding glass door and a transom window above it, there are towering views behind the townhome that seem to extend the great room.

In the case of the show home, the space behind the townhome is a sprawling park with a playground.

The Hillcrest is a 1,266-squarefoot floor plan with a front-attached single-car garage offered at Nolan Park in the northwest community of Nolan Hill. The development is by Cardel Lifestyles, which was crowned Multi-Family Builder of the Year at the 2017 Canadian Home Builders’ Association-Alberta Awards of Excellence in Housing.

Beyond the windows expanding the visual interest of the great room, it’s also a significant source of natural light for the entire main floor. While a bulkhead helps define the great room as it own space, an open-concept design links it to the adjacent dining area and kitchen, creating a well-connected space for hosting friends and family.

One of the benefits to the dining area in relation to the great room is its flexibility. As staged in the show home, it works nicely as a regular eating area for three or four people. But when entertaining, a larger table that dips into the great room, can be added short-term.

There’s also overflow seating in the kitchen with an extended eating bar on the island that can support three people.

The L-shaped kitchen is both elegantly finished and functional. There’s generous space between the island and the kitchen features along the wall, so people can gather and socialize or circulate with ease. It has a stainless steel appliance package — presented in the show home with a gas range, wall oven,

and chimney-style hoodfan — along with a full-height backsplash, and high-gloss acrylic cabinets in grey oak with soft-close doors and drawers.

Privacy is a consideration, as well. The foyer is sunken and pulled back from the rest of the main level. Someone standing at the door may have views of the dining area, but the kitchen and great room should be tucked away.

On the second level, young families have what they need. There are two well-sized secondary bedrooms facing front, and a 13 foot by 12 foot master bedroom with views of the aforementioned park behind the townhome.

The master bedroom boasts a spacious walk-in closet and an ensuite with upscale specifications, including a shower door that’s five feet wide with 10 mm glass.

The central piece of the second level has a full bathroom across the hallway from a laundry area with a front-load washer and dryer.

This show home is displayed with a developed walkout basement, which includes a bright rec area and a full bathroom.

Nolan Hill by Anthem United is located in the city’s Symons Valley corridor, near large commercial complexes such as Creekside Shopping Centre, and Sage Hill Crossing, which features both a Walmart Superstore and Loblaws City Market. Nolan Park is also walking distance to the Gates of Nolan Hill, anchored by a Sobeys grocery store.
