Demand is up for building permits

- JOSH SKAPIN

Demand for new homes picked up in Calgary last month, with a community on the southeast end of the city again leading the way.

Home builders submitted 353 residential building permit applications in February, says the City of Calgary’s planning and development department. This is up 25 per cent from the 266 that were on the books during the same month in 2017.

Mahogany by Hopewell Residential led all communities, posting 36 residential permit applications last month.

This follows a month in which the north Calgary community of Livingston by Brookfield Residential carried the pace with 32.

Mahogany — which features the largest freshwater lake within Calgary city limits — has paced the year-long tally in residential permit applications, every year since 2014.

Beyond Mahogany, Calgary’s southeast quadrant was busy last month, with 26 residential permit applications from builders in Legacy by WestCreek Developments, 22 and 19 from Brookfield’s Seton and Cranston communities, respectively, and 15 in Walden by Genstar Development Co.

On the north end of the city, Cornerstone by Walton Development and Management and Livingston led with 24 and 23, respectively. Northeast Calgary ’s Redstone, and northwest Calgary’s Sage Hill and Carrington communities, were next with 14 applications apiece, says the city.

Carrington is comprised of separate master-planned communities by Mattamy Homes and Genstar, Sage Hill is by Anthem United, and Redstone is by Qualico Communities.
