ALBERTA NOMINEES

Who’s up for a Juno award?

- ERIC VOLMERS

Fans of Calgary and Albertabased artists up for Juno Awards will not have to wait until Sunday to see the results, with almost all local, or formerly local, nominees being in categories that will be announced during Saturday’s Juno Gala Dinner and Awards in Vancouver.

So those wanting to cheer on hometown heroes should tune into the live stream at junotv.ca or cbcmusic.ca/JUNOS at 7 p.m. Calgary time.

Here’s who to look out for:

Vincent Ho: This Calgary-based composer is up for two Junos. Both are for his album Shaman & Arctic Symphony, recorded with the Winnipeg Symphony. It’s up for Classical Album of the Year: Large Ensemble and Best Classical Composition.

Jan Lisiecki: Despite being only 23 — as of Friday — this classical pianist is a veteran of international concert stages and the Junos. This year, he is nominated for Classical Album of the Year: Large Ensemble for Chopin: Works for Piano & Orchestra, which he recorded with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra. This is his third nomination.

Tim Williams: This veteran bluesman from Calgary joined forces with Kenny (Blues Boss) Wayne and Brandon Isaak for Big City, Back Country Blues, which is up for Best Blues Album.

Nickelback: This year, even the coveted “Rock Album of the Year” will be handed out on Saturday before Sunday’s festivities.

The boys from Hanna are also no stranger to the Junos, having earned 37 nominations over the years and taken home 12 trophies.

They are nominated for Feed the Machine.

High Valley: The pride of Bluenort, Alta., is up for Country Album of the Year for Dear Life.

Shawn Everett: The Bragg Creek native is up for Recording Engineer of the Year for his work with The War on Drugs and Perfume Genius.

Striker: Edmonton metalheads received a nod in the Metal/Hard Music Album of the Year category for their self-titled album.

Ruth B.: On Sunday, if you are determined to cheer on a Wild Rose native, set aside some good vibes for Edmonton’s Ruth B.

The 22-year-old wunderkind from Edmonton is up for three trophies that will be presented during the Michael Buble-hosted Juno Awards. Safe Haven, her debut, is up for Pop Album of the Year, which will be awarded on Saturday.

But she is also up for Artist of the Year and Album of the Year, which are both categories that will be televised Sunday night.

The Juno Gala Dinner and Awards streams live at 7 p.m. Saturday on junotv.ca or cbcmusic.ca/JUNOS at 7 p.m. The Juno Awards air Sunday at 6 p.m. on the CBC.
