Two local home builders take top prizes in national competition
The top prizes in a national competition recognizing the best performances in the residential industry last year have gone to two home builders from Calgary.
Winners of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association 2018 National Awards for Housing Excellence were announced during the association’s 75th national conference on Friday in Victoria, B.C.
Picking up the highest honours were Homes by Avi with the Design Excellence Award and Stepper Homes with the Marketing Excellence Award.
These trophies are earned by the company with finalists entries that perform the strongest in individual new home and marketing award categories, respectively.
For the Design Excellence win, the builder needed to have entered in at least three new home award categories and won a minimum of one, and on the marketing side, they need to have entered in at least four categories and won at least one.
Along with the top home design title, Homes by Avi, which has been building in Calgary since 1978, took home three other awards.
Its entry dubbed Carrington Hawthorne won the category for Detached Home-Production, 2,201 to 2,500 square feet.
Avi Urban, Homes by Avi Group of Companies’ multi-family arm, took home hardware, as well, winning with its development in inner-city Mission.
The Duke at Mission-Unit 113 entry was tops in the Mid- to HighRise Condominium or Apartment Units 1,000 sq. ft. and Over category.
Homes by Avi had six nods in new home award categories, including four from Duke.
Homes by Avi’s other trophy came from its famed Stampede Rotary Dream Home. The home featuring light-toned woods, greys, and black accents in a Scandinavian theme won the marketing award for interior decorating.
Along with the Marketing Excellence Award, Stepper had two other marketing wins. The builder picked up the trophies for Direct Promotion-Print, and Print Ad, with its Homeowner Appreciation Movie Event Invitation, and “This Isn’t Our First Rodeo” entries, respectively.
This follows a major win for Stepper Homes at the provincial level late last year. At the 2017 Canadian Home Builders’ Association-Alberta Awards of Excellence in Housing and Safety Leadership Awards, the builder was crowned Ralph Scurfield Builder of the Year.
Overall, companies from the Calgary area carried the pace with 10 awards in individual categories. Local businesses also led all cities nationwide with 53 of the 183 finalists.
Other new home awards from Calgary were earned by Ashton Luxury Living and Lupi Luxury Homes. Ashton’s entry dubbed the Rosemont won for Detached Home-Production Under 1,700 sq. ft., and a private residence by Lupi won for Detached Home-Custom, 3,501 to 5,000 sq. ft.
In the renovation class, Calgary ’s Kon-strux Developments was a force, notching three wins in the segment.
Kon-strux captured renovation awards for Kitchen-Under $50,000 with its Chef ’s Delight entry, Kitchen-$50,000 to $100,000 for Shades of Seafoam Blue, and Kitchen- Over $100,000 for Linear Elegance.
Kon-strux also leads all renovation companies in finalists for the upcoming BILD (Building Industry and Land Development) Calgary Region Awards set to be announced at a gala event April 14. It has 11 entries in the running, including nods in seven of the eight renovation award categories.
