Holland Park’s garden to help residents connect

Development in Walden emphasizes green space and quality time outdoors

People looking to buy a new townhome in southeast Calgary can now explore full-sized examples of what’s available at a development that’s planned to include a community garden.

Holland Park, the latest multifamily development by Excel Homes, will raise the curtain on its first two show homes today at noon. It’s located at 68 Walcrest Gate S.E., which is in the community of Walden.

Holland Park will build out to 216 townhomes across 21 buildings, with prices that currently start from $288,857, including GST. Eighty per cent of these townhomes will have a double or tandem car garage and the balance will have a single car garage.

First possessions are expected to be available in late 2018.

The range in square footage for these townhomes is 1,177 to 1,452 square feet.

Displayed as show homes are the 1,293-square-foot Plan K and 1,452-square-foot Plan P.

Plan P has three bedrooms, a den, and two bathrooms, with a double-car garage.

This townhome allows for the buyer to add a half bathroom to the den on the ground floor.

“This allows for a great mix of living and work space within the home, and the best part of all is that you don’t have to sacrifice your double car garage to do so,” says Stephanie Chapman, marketing and communications specialist at Excel.

The L-shaped kitchen, featuring an island with generous preparation space, is one of the highlights to a main floor that Chapman calls “spacious and open.”

Plan K has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a den, and a tandem car garage.

“The main floor is completely open with natural light flowing from one end to another,” Chapman says.

“Ample cupboard space and a large island help to make the kitchen the heart of this home.”

Holland Park is also designed for quality time in the fresh air, with a planned central green space, and community garden.

“The appealing part of a community garden is that you can grow your own fruits, veggies, herbs, and spices,” says Chapman. “It truly gets people involved in what they’re eating and provides them with fresh ingredients without having to visit a store.

“More and more people are working out and trying to eat healthy, this will really help give them an advantage to living a healthier lifestyle,” she adds. “It also provides the people within the development a place to connect, get to know one another, and possibly even share what they grow within their own gardens.

“The hope is that the garden will inspire people to grow their own produce and also help to bring the community together.”

Walden is a 166-hectare community by Genstar Development Co. that has 49 hectares in green space and nearly eight kilometres of pathways. The community connects to a regional pathways system that eventually links to Fish Creek Provincial Park.

In addition to Holland Park, Excel is also showcasing its singlefamily segment in Walden. Today, the builder unveils show homes for its double car front-attached garage models, the 1,826-squarefoot Halton and 2,075-square-foot Garnet, and laned models, the 1,413-square-foot Huntley and 1,466-square foot Porter.

Excel’s show homes are open 2 to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and noon to 5 p.m. on Fridays and weekends.

A grand opening for a show home parade that includes Excel’s models, and homes by other members of Walden’s builder group, will be held in April.

The main floor is completely open with natural light flowing from one end to another.
