Avro flies high with brigh tl iving spaces
Hopewell design offers sunny great room that feels wide open and well-defined
A bright, airy and spacious place to sit and chat can set the tone for a home’s entire main floor.
It’s part of what makes the Avro model by Hopewell Residential a warm and friendly design. Its great room is not only a welcoming space to relax and connect with family at the end of a work or school day, but where people will be excited to host everything from afternoon tea to a Saturday night hockey game.
Measuring 1,298 square feet, this semi-detached, also known as a paired home, is presented as a show home in a charming Craftsman elevation in the southeast Calgary community of Mahogany.
Mahogany, master-planned by Hopewell’s land development division, delivers a standout lineup of outdoor amenities. This includes 30 hectares of naturalized wetlands, 22 kilometres of pathways, a five-hectare central park, and a 25-hectare freshwater lake, the largest within city limits.
The community also boasts a wide assortment of shops and services with a commercial development dubbed Mahogany Village Market, anchored by a Sobeys grocery store.
Within the Avro, the great room’s front-facing wall is covered in windows that fill the space with natural light. It’s 11 feet one inch by 11 feet six inches and features an optional elongated electric fireplace with a television mounted above it.
While the great room is part of the open-concept main level, it’s designed to feel like its own space. Unlike the kitchen and dining area, which line up, the great room is slightly offset.
From the couch in the great room, there are only partial views of the other areas of the main level. This provides architectural interest, a cosy place to relax — and after hosting people for dinner, welcome separation from an understandably messy cooking space.
A stub wall separating the great room and foyer continues its balance of feeling open but defined.
The spread of sunshine is another highlight. In addition to the windows in the great room, the windows are equally-substantial in the kitchen at the back. A smaller, rectangle-shaped window in the dining area chips in, as well. In the L-shaped kitchen, it’s easy to think about movement.
It’s designed for a comfortable transition from one appliance to another. And with generous floor place, multiple people can help start dinner and not get in each other’s way. The kitchen features both a central island and an extended eating bar off one end of the counter. This takes the pressure off the island being an entertaining or secondary dining space, letting it function exclusively as a place to chop, dice, stir and season.
The kitchen also has stainless steel appliances, a full-height backsplash, cabinets with soft-close doors and drawers, and a pantry.
Unlike most half bathrooms, accessed off the main level, this one is slightly removed.
Headlining the second floor is the front-facing master bedroom. This 11 foot six inch by 11 foot one inch sleep space is accessorized with an ensuite and walk-in closet.
There’s also a central full bathroom, and two secondary bedrooms that sit side by side.
