ADAPTABLE SPACES

Carbon 2 fit for all the family

- JOSH SKAPIN

Some house hunters need a floor plan that not only fits the needs of their nuclear family, but extended family, as well.

In living arrangements where grandparents are part of the household, the ability to avoid regular use of stairs can be an important consideration.

This is one of the ways the Carbon 2 by Cedarglen Homes thrives as a multi-generational home. As displayed in a show home in the Parks of Harvest Hills, it has an option for the buyer to add a bedroom on the main level.

For people using this bedroom, all of their daily needs are accessed without the need to climb stairs. This includes the ability to get ready in the morning. Also demonstrated in the show home, the space typically designated as a half bathroom is revised to include a shower.

This 2,255-square-foot model is presented as one of three show homes in the Parks of Harvest Hills, a recently launched community on the north end of the city. It has a double car front-attached garage, and the show home is displayed with an electric car charger installed within it.

This community, located near a variety of commercial amenities on Country Hills Boulevard, is the first by Cedarglen, which has QuantumPlace Developments as its development manager.

The Parks of Harvest Hills will commit more than 28 per cent of the community to accessible open space, along with the 1.4-hectare (3.5-acre) water feature.

This includes two major parks. Harvest Park will have tennis courts, a playground, and outdoor fitness equipment, and Harmony Park will include walkways around the water feature that connect to the regional pathway.

Including the main floor bedroom, the Carbon 2 has four bedrooms above grade and a fifth in the developed basement.

The master bedroom is a highlight. It’s generously sized, has a large window, and features an upscale ensuite and walk-in closet behind the same point of entrance. This lets people shower and get dressed in one area, rather than walking in and out of the sleep space, possibly disturbing their partner who is still in bed.

The ensuite is designed to share. Two sinks are separated by substantial counter space and sit under a full-width mirror. It also includes a glass shower and deep soaker tub under two windows.

A spacious laundry room with a front-load washer and dryer is conveniently positioned a few steps away from the master bedroom.

On the opposite end of the second floor, two facing secondary bedrooms sit just outside of the front-facing bonus room. As the show home staging demonstrates, the space accommodates a couch, chairs, and plenty of additional room to circulate with ease.

On the home’s main level, there’s a thoughtful balance between connections and privacy.

Through the front door, a wall with a coat closet restricts views of the more personal areas of the home. A delivery person or work acquaintance can drop something off without clear sight lines of family in the kitchen and great room.

The connections are found in the open-concept great room, kitchen, and dining area.

Eyes will be drawn to the great room, which features a stylish elongated electric fireplace surrounded in full-height stone. It sits next to one of two expansive windows on the rear-facing wall.

The other such window provides direct light to the dining area, which is boxed out, and pulls in sunshine from a side window, as well.

Domestic chefs will enjoy the

L-shaped kitchen, which is both functional and boasts finishes that make it a showpiece.

It has a large island with a sink and extended eating bar that comfortably seats four people. There’s also a pantry, high volume of cabinets, full-height tile backsplash, and stainless steel appliances, including a chimney-style hood fan.

The developed basement contains the aforementioned bedroom, full bathroom, and a wellsized rec area with a walk-up bar.
