Stoner rock, marijuana stars of 420 festival this weekend

-

We’re still months away from the expected legalization of marijuana, but a local pot festival is raring to go this weekend.

This year’s 420 Music and Arts Fest / Expo runs Thursday to Saturday at Distortion Live music venue at 3828 Macleod Trail.

More than 20 acts are expected to play over the three-nights with music appropriate to the topic — stoner rock and stoner metal, psychedelic, doom and some heavy blues. Headliners include Dopethrone from Montreal, Brant Bjork from Palm Desert, Calif., Sasquatch from L.A., and La Chinga of Vancouver.

In addition to the musical acts, there will be a free expo on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with vendors, artists, artisans and craftspeople from across Western Canada. There will be some cannabis specific vendors, too, with hemp products, clothing and glassware and advocates such as The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), Weed Girls and Calgary

Cannabis Society will also participate to answer questions from attendees.

There will also be representatives from medical marijuana companies to answer people who have questions about prescriptions and products.

Festival passes ($89 plus fees) are only available online at the festival store, www.420musicandartsfestival. ca/store-2

The website also has a schedule of entertainment and more information relating to vendors and food trucks.

The inaugural festival last year was sponsored by Big Rock Brewery and Metalheads United.
