Calgary’s only public lake will be getting a makeover for the 2020 summer season, thanks to an Alberta Parks redevelopment project.

The Sikome Aquatic Facility first opened in the late ’70s and has been a popular spot for Calgarians looking to cool off with a quick dip during the summer months. But aging infrastructure and an increased number of visitors over the last few years have led Alberta Parks to come up with a plan to remodel the facility and bring it into the 21st century.

“It’s very popular and it’s a great asset to the city of Calgary, and we want to enhance it and modernize the facility to meet the needs of today,” said Maria Lynn with Alberta Parks.

Lynn also said Alberta Parks is looking to extend that facility’s operating season into the spring and fall.

A survey last year found users are most interested in Sikome Lake’s natural playground, rope climbing course, aquatic programming and equipment rentals.

Based on community input, Lynn said the day-use area could get more picnic areas, fire pits, a new concession stand and more natural playground elements.

“(The nature playground) really meets that family experience and provides something new — a value-add to the site — and fits with Alberta Park’s vision around nature play and encouraging enjoyment of our sites,” Lynn said.

The province is looking to add a number of youth programs, like ecotourism and camping education seminars. The redevelopment will also improve accessibility for public transit and emergency services.

The second phase of the project began with a 30-day public participation period.

Until May 24, Calgarians can fill out an online survey to tell the province what features they would like to see added to the facility.

An open house will be held on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Bow Valley Ranch Visitor Centre for Calgarians to hear about the proposed upgrades and offer suggestions to the province.
