The widower of a Calgary woman killed by a motorist last year says he finally feels some closure now that charges have been laid.

On Wednesday, police charged a Calgary man with the death of 48-year-old Anjna Sharma.

“She was beautiful inside and outside,” said Suneet Sharma, Anjna’s husband. “I don’t know even a single person who wasn’t touched by her always-smiling nature.”

Around 7 p.m. on May 23, 2017, police say, a 2015 Ford F-150 was travelling northeast on 26th Avenue N.E. near Sunridge Mall when the driver suffered a medical event and veered off the road.

The truck travelled into oncoming traffic, colliding with a 2014 Toyota Corolla. The Ford then mounted the curb, striking and killing Anjna Sharma, who was taking a walk on a nearby path while on a break from work.

Police say the truck continued across the road and finally came to a stop when it crashed into a building.

The force of the initial crash pushed the Toyota backward, coming to a rest on a traffic island near 26th Avenue and an access road.

The male driver of the Ford, his 33-year-old male passenger and the 36-year-old female driver of the Toyota all suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Suneet says his wife was the “backbone” of their family and her death has been difficult for the couple’s children.

“It’s hard, but we’re trying our best. They’re also trying their best,” he said. “A lot of times we end up talking to each other for hours.”

James Ian Beagrie, 45, of Calgary has been charged with criminal negligence causing death.
