Calgary pitcher Soroka notches first big-league hit
Atlanta’s rookie pitcher follows up big day on mound by getting a single in loss to Giants
The kid can pitch.
That was evident last Tuesday night when Mike Soroka went out and spun a gem to get his first Major League Baseball victory in his debut performance against the New York Mets.
On Sunday, the 20-year-old Calgary product proved he’s not too shabby with the bat, either.
Soroka collected his first bigleague hit with a second-inning slap up the middle off starter Andrew Suarez of the San Francisco Giants.
The ball was then tossed into the Atlanta Braves dugout for Soroka to treasure forever.
Unfortunately for Soroka, he lasted just four innings in the matinee at SunTrust Park in Atlanta, allowing four runs on seven hits and three walks and getting tagged with the 4-3 loss.
He’s now 1-1 in his MLB career, that sizzling debut against the Mets including just six hits allowed and a run in six inning of work now firmly in the rear-view.
“Words can’t even begin to express how incredible these last couple days have been,” Soroka tweeted a few days back. “The best part by far was seeing the family and friends who came out to support. This was for them, and I wouldn’t have liked to live this dream without them. It’s a moment I will cherish forever.”
Now it’s time to settle into the Braves rotation and carve out a permanent spot for himself in the bigs.
