Team Canada demolishes Korea at worlds

- CANADA 10, KOREA 0

HERNING, DENMARK Canadabounced back from a loss to the United States in the opening game at the world championship by trashing Korea 10-0 on Sunday.

After losing 5-4 to the U.S. in a penalty shootout, Canada was ruthless against Korea, a championship newcomer in a Group B game in Herning, Denmark.

Captain Connor McDavid scored his first goal of the tournament and added two assists, and Tyson Jost scored twice and had an assist to lead Canada.

Pierre-Luc Dubois and Joel Edmundson also had a goal and two assists each.

“We did everything we had to,” McDavid said.

“It’s the first time we’ve had Edmundson in our lineup and Jost joined us late, so good to see them get some opportunity out there today,” coach Bill Peters said.

Colton Parayko, Ryan O’Reilly and Dubois netted a goal each in the span of 1:25 early in the second period to jump to a 5-0 lead.

The Canadians scored six goals in that period, forcing Korea to pull Canadian-born goaltender Matt Dalton. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Brayden Schenn and Jordan Eberle also scored for Canada.

Goalie Curtis McElhinney made 25 saves for the shutout.

Canada plays host Denmark (1-0-0-1) on Monday and the game will likely feature a goaltending matchup between McElhinney and his Toronto Maple Leafs creasemate, Frederik Andersen.

“He’s a big-time goaltender, so we’re going to have to make sure we’re in his eyes,” Peters said.

Sweden made another step on the way to defending its title by edging the Czech Republic 3-2 for its second win.

Norway prevailed over Germany 5-4 after a shootout, and Olympic champion Russia again displayed its offensive might in a 7-0 rout of Austria.
