Postmedia garners two international media awards
Postmedia Calgary received two honours from the International News Media Association this week.
The association gave a secondplace award to the Calgary Herald and Calgary Sun in a category that recognizes journalism encouraging print readership and engagement. The awarded work included dozens of pieces of content documenting stories of new Canadians who arrived here from Syria.
Postmedia Calgary also received an honourable mention in the best use of video category.
Project lead Kerianne Sproule created a poignant video called Call of the Rail, which documented the restoration of a rare colonist car at Calgary’s Heritage Park. With support from a national Postmedia video team and Postmedia Calgary journalists, including Leah Hennel, Sproule’s video has been shared tens of thousands of times across North America.
The journalists sharing the award recognizing the Syrian content include Sproule, Hennel, Yolande Cole, Eva Ferguson, Val Fortney, Michele Jarvie, Shawn Logan, Bill Kaufmann, Meghan Potkins, James Wood, Gavin Young, Al Charest, David Blackwell, Darren Francey, Paul Harvey, Doug Hintz, Martin Hudson, Ricky Leong, Mary Ellen Southwick, Monica Zurowski and Swerve magazine’s Bruce Weir and Brent Morrison.
This 2018 competition, known as the INMA Global Media Awards, garnered entries from 220 media companies in 39 countries.
