Two escaped prisoners have been captured by police after attempting to flee first in a stolen pickup truck, then on an ATV. The prisoners, who were among four that fled the Red Deer Remand Centre on Tuesday, were finally caught in a farm field near Innisfail after a foot chase with the help of a police dog.

On Tuesday afternoon, Innisfail RCMP responded to a call for assistance from Blackfalds RCMP regarding a stolen black Dodge pickup truck that was last seen travelling out of their jurisdiction.

After receiving calls from the public and with an observation from an Alberta Parks Conservation Officer west of Innisfail, RCMP members began searching for the vehicle.

The truck was spotted, then followed by police from a distance around the Innisfail area. The vehicle was later found abandoned in an empty field in Red Deer County, south of Highway 42 and Range Road 265.

Within minutes, police on scene were notified of the theft of an ATV from a rural yard near where the truck was found.

The ATV was located with the two suspects riding on it a short distance away in a farm field.

While trying to flee police, the ATV ran into a police vehicle that was parked at an approach. The two male suspects then fled on foot, with one caught by a police dog.

The second suspect was arrested by a member of the Innisfail General Investigation Section.

The men were identified as two of the four inmates who had escaped from the remand centre, and were both wanted on outstanding warrants for prison breach and being at large.

Quinn Russell Peterson, 26, and Douglas Brian Power, 52, are in police custody as the investigation continues pending their return to the remand centre.

The remaining fugitive is identified as Dallas Albert Rain, 28. A fourth inmate was arrested shortly after the escape on Tuesday.

Rain went to remand on June 6 for 30 days. His charges, out of Rocky Mountain House, include mischief, resisting a peace officer and failing to attend court.

Peterson went to remand on Sept. 1, 2017, for 440 days, while Power went to remand on March 9 for 150 days as well as 12 months probation.

RCMP are advising the public not to approach the escaped prisoner and to call 911 or Red Deer City RCMP at 403-343-5575.

In a statement, the Alberta justice and solicitor-general department said it would launch an internal review to investigate the incident, to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
