ROTARY DREAM HOME

House open for tours during Stampede

- CLAIRE YOUNG

Homes by Avi is presenting a sophisticated and moody take on mid-century modern in this year’s Stampede Rotary Dream Home.

Architecture and art take centre stage in this year’s home, a 2,438-square-foot, two-storey home valued at $1,037,331. And, this grand prize in the lottery supporting 50 local charities will come furnished this year. The threebedroom, attached garage home will be divided into seven parts and moved to its permanent home on a corner lot in Walden, a new community by Genstar Development Co. in southeast Calgary.

Julie Punter, manager of show home selections and presentation for Homes by Avi, says the Dream Home moves in new directions every year.

“I knew I wanted to take the house on a darker palette than last year, just because we were so bright and cheery and open. The home needed to have a bit of that mood and darkness, so a mid-century was a good fit,” she says.

Some of the standout architectural features include soaring ceilings, detailed built-ins and a covered deck. The great room, for instance, is open to above, with a view from the velvet couch of the matching wallpapered ceilings in the dining room and master bedroom retreat above it. The nighttime navy paper features a gold geometric pattern that echoes many light fixtures throughout the home. The hallway on the second floor feels almost as tall as the great room. Windows high above in the hall provide plenty of indirect light to brighten the space.

Geometric trends popular in the mid-century as well as today lend to the bold design. Chevron tiling is found in kitchen backsplash, while the dining room’s wood flooring is set in herringbone, and hexagonal tiles in two colours play across the master bathroom.

Mat gold details — furniture, cabinets and lights and even on painted walls — add overall refinement. In fact, only two pieces of furniture don’t have gold accents on them.

Signature spaces in the home include Punter’s favourite, the retreat room off the master bedroom. While it could be a yoga room, a workout room, an office, a nursery, here, it is dressed up with deep leather lounge chairs and glass table bar.

“We’re calling it the whiskey room,” she says.

The large walls are the perfect gallery for presenting 31 pieces of original art painted by Calgary artist Tiffany Lynn Cuffley.

The parting touch for those who tour the home is a wall-sized mural by her in the third bedroom. Here, as in all of Cuffley’s art, are thin, swift, swooping loops. A former professional figure skater, these days she skates most mornings and paints in the afternoons. She realized her signature mark is inspired from the scratches left on the ice from her blades, the written record of her performances.

The Dream Home will be open for the public to tour at the Stampede grounds during Stampede, from July 5 to 15. Lottery tickets are available at calgarystampedelotteries.com.
