FIVE LIVE SOUNDS

The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth doubles as the city’s biggest music festival; here are five acts to see.

-

Tuesday, July 10: Whitney Rose

Rose’s latest, Rule 62, is filled with breakup songs despite there not being a breakup in sight. “It’s certainly not reflective of my personal life,” she told the Calgary Herald in February. “...But I think that it’s kind of a veiled, quote unquote #Metoo kind of thing.” At Mikey’s on 12th, 918 12th Ave. S.W. Show, 8:30 p.m. $20. mikeyson12th.com.

Wednesday, July 11: Sheryl Crow

It’s been 24 years since Crow topped the charts with “All I Wanna Do,” but she hasn’t stagnated in the past: she recently wrote a song titled “Dude, I’m still alive” in response to a tweet that she’d be “rolling in her grave” if she heard Kid Rock is running for Senate. At Coca-Cola Stage, Stampede Grounds. 9 p.m. Free with admission to the Stampede.

Friday, July 13: Brad Paisley

The country superstar Paisley also has his eye on the modern era. He pillories selfie culture in “selfie#theinternetisforever” from his latest, Love and War: “Posing in the bathroom mirror, in a skimpy little two piece / In the background there’s a toddler, cryin’ on the toilet seat.” At Scotiabank Saddledome. 7:30 p.m. $84.99 - $249.99. TM.

Saturday, July 14: The Big Slam

Skate meets surf on the Brewery Flats. The skateboard punks Lagwagon headline this festival presented by the Alberta River Surfing Association and Big Winter Classic. At Brewery Flats, Inglewood, corner of 11th Street and 12th Avenue S.E. Starting at

4 p.m. $48. slamthefestival.com.

Saturday, July 14: Armond Duck Chief

As a competitive steer wrestler, the award-winning country singer-songwriter from Siksika knows a thing or two about the Calgary Stampede. He brings songs influenced by country music legends like George Jones, Hank Williams and Waylon Jennings. At Dickens Pub, 1000 9th Ave. S.W. 8 p.m. $20. TF.
