The Distinguished Business Leader Award, co-presented by the Haskayne School of Business and the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, has recognized outstanding leaders in the Calgary business community since 1993. Since 2008, proceeds from the gala have supported the endowment of a scholarship awarded annually to a Haskayne undergraduate student who reflects a commitment to ethical leadership. Additionally, in 2014, the Calgary Chamber’s Emerging Entrepreneur fund was introduced to support our city’s entrepreneurs.

More than 420 guests gathered at the Hyatt Regency on June 21 to honour Guy Turcotte, recipient of the 2018 Distinguished Business Leader Award. An apt choice indeed as Turcotte’s CV is more than impressive. He is the sole shareholder in Stone Creek Resorts, which owns two major real estate developments in Alberta and British Columbia. Further, Turcotte is a founding shareholder of Field Upgrading Limited, a Calgary-based company applying new materials and processes to upgrading oil. Previously, he was the founder of three energy companies: Chauvco Resources Ltd., Western Oil Sands Inc. and Veresen Inc. After receiving a diploma in Gas Technology (honours), he completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering (honours) and an MBA degree. His quiet philanthropy has helped many an organization.

Turcotte joins an illustrious list of previous honourees including: Nutrien executive vice-president Leslie O’Donoghue (2017); Mac Van Weilingen (2014); Patrick Daniels (2009); George Brookman (2008); Michael Tims (2007); Linda Hohol (2005); Jim Gray (1999); Bob Brawn (1996); Alan Norris (2013); and Dick Haskayne (1997), to name but a few.

Turcotte’s wife Dawn and their children Paula, Joe, Tom and Alex were in attendance at the prestigious awards event as were: patrons Dick and Lois Haskayne; Mayor Naheed Nenshi; Calgary Chamber president and CEO Sandip Lalli; U of C president and vice-chancellor Elizabeth Cannon with colleague Nuvyn Peters, the vice-president of development and alumni engagement; U of C chancellor and emcee Deborah Yedlin; past chancellor Jim Dinning; Calgary 2026 chairman Scott Hutcheson with community leader Lesley Conway; Bob and Carole Brawn; former ICD chairman Art Korpach; DHR International’s Shahauna Siddiqui; Al Duerr; Calgary Foundation’s Eva Friesen; Jayman BUILT’s Jay Westman and his wife Karen; Lancashire Holdings chief investment officer Denise O’Donoghue and her mom Shirley O’Donoghue; Haskayne School of Business dean Jim Dewald and his wife Chris; Prairie Merchant chairman W. Brett Wilson; and my terrific handler, senior communications strategist Karen Perl-Pollard.

Congratulations Guy on a deserved award. You do our city proud.
