UNIQUE CHARM IN AIRDRIE

Style galore in McCormick show home

- JOSH SKAPIN

Uncommon but well-executed design traits in a home can be like art.

They set floor plans apart, not only giving the people who live there a regular visual treat, but something extra to be proud of when friends or family stop by.

These qualities, along with a concentration on smart, functional choices for day to day performance, are at the heart of what makes a show home by Homes by Avi in Airdrie stand out.

The McCormick is a 2,054-square-foot front-drive single-family home that’s showcased in King ’s Heights, a masterplanned community on Airdrie’s southeast side.

Extra touches — sometimes subtle, other times obvious — intended to elevate the space, seem to show up in every room. This includes everything from cutouts flanking the fireplace filled with small stacked logs, to the stylish coffered ceiling in the great room and tray-style ceiling in the dining area, and the sunken bonus room upstairs.

The 18 foot eight inch by 13 foot six inch bonus room is a few steps down from the rest of the second floor.

Not only does this add charm and definition to the space, but allows for its vaulted ceiling, which stands 12 feet tall. Double doors with glass fronts step out to a spacious balcony that looks over the front yard.

There are three bedrooms on the second floor, headlined by a large master bedroom with a walk-in closet and upscale ensuite located along the rear-facing wall.

The ensuite is ready for multiple purposes. It has dual vanities and an abundance of counter space — making it easier to get ready for work in the morning — and a tiled shower with a glass door next to a deep soaker tub, for a soothing place to unwind.

One of the underrated but key aspects of any family home is the dimensions of the secondary bedrooms. It’s a relief for buyers to know their children have the spaces they need for the long haul. Such is the case with the McCormick, where one bedroom measures 11 feet six inches by nine feet eight inches and the other is 11 feet six inches by nine feet six inches.

There’s also something for people who want or need to avoid the use of stairs, which is common in multi-generational living arrangements.

With grandparents part of the household, it can be beneficial to have a bedroom on the main level, which is a floor plan option demonstrated in the McCormick show home. Earmarked on the standard floor plan as a flex room, it can be reconfigured to provide someone in the family with a bedroom, putting the home’s primary shared spaces just a few steps away.

Giving the people who use the main floor bedroom a place to get ready in the morning, the standard half bathroom was also converted to a four-piece bathroom, with a shower and tub.

The back half of the main floor is a bright and inviting open-concept design.

Its L-shaped kitchen features an attractive combination of colours, with a light-toned wood for the upper cabinets and floating shelves, grey full-height backsplash, stainless steel appliances, and striking blue on the lower cabinets and base of the island.

The appliances, which include a chic chimney-style hood fan, are well-dispersed — allowing one person to be at the stove and another at the fridge, without feeling cramped.

The island has a sink and eating bar presented with space for two people to sit.

People who appreciate natural light will be drawn to the dining area. Large windows along the rear-facing wall and sliding glass doors to the deck are stellar sources of sunshine.

The show home is displayed with a developed basement, which adds a fifth bedroom and another full bathroom to the home. The basement also boasts a hub to both relax and entertain, with a rec area and walk-up bar.

King ’s Heights is a community by Melcor Developments. It offers the convenience of existing retail amenities with a 331,000-squarefoot complex called Kingsview Market that’s anchored by a SaveOn-Foods grocery store.
