MAKE StONEy TRAIL tHE TREAty 7 WAy

-

Re: “NDP government commits to west leg of ring road,” July 6.

Now that the final leg of Stoney Trail has been approved for construction by the provincial government, I have a suggestion to pass on to the City of Calgary and the province of Alberta.

A few months ago, there was a proposal put forward by the Tsuut’ina to change the name of Stoney Trail in their new section of the ring road and, in light of that, I would like to make this suggestion.

I think the whole ring road should be renamed Treaty 7 Way, with designated sections of the 101 kilometres named after the five First Nations that were signatories to that agreement.

This would include the Kainai, Piikani, Siksika, Stoney Nakoda and the Tsuut’ina.

By doing this, it gives recognition to Treaty 7, which was instrumental in the development of southern Alberta and the establishment of Calgary as a major centre, and it also gives recognition to the five First Nations groups that made this possible.
