A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family of a Chestermere man who suffered severe brain trauma after being stung by a wasp.

According to the GoFundMe page, Reg Avery was picking up his trailer on June 26 when he was stung and went into anaphylactic shock.

He suffered severe brain trauma due to lack of oxygen and has been in the intensive-care unit at the Peter Lougheed Hospital for about two weeks, with doctors unable to predict the extent of his recovery.

Avery, long involved with the community of Chestermere, including volunteering as vice-president of the Chestermere Regional Community Association, was voted onto the board last November and then appointed vice-president.

Paul Godley, president of the community association, has known Avery for about six years and said he’s an all-around family man who loves to help out.

“He’s volunteered to help on hockey teams as a coach or manager

He’s very giving, very kind, very selfless, does whatever his family needs, whatever he can do.

— depending on whatever the need is, he’s helped,” said Godley.

“He’s very giving, very kind, very selfless, does whatever his family needs, whatever he can do to help support the community.”

Godley said Avery has been stung by insects in the past and never had any reactions. He said Avery’s health status is unknown and has “dumbfounded” doctors and emergency room staff.

“They’re doing everything they can but they ’re not really sure what else they can do,” said Godley.

“It’s tragic, I don’t know any other way to describe it.”

Since Avery’s recovery is unknown and there’s the possibility he may never work again, the GoFundMe page has been set up to support Avery ’s wife, Theresa, and their boys, with a goal of $50,000.
