A man shot to death at a southeast motel bar early Saturday morning was a “good guy,” said a friend who was shocked by the incident.

Adam Colquhoun, who also went by the nickname Stretchy, was identified by friends as the victim after the shooting inside the Town and Country Motel in Forest Lawn just before 1 a.m.

Paramedics arrived soon after and a man could be seen being taken from the bar into the back of an ambulance.

Naomi Nania with Alberta Health Services said the man was taken to Foothills Hospital in life-threatening condition. Police said the victim, a man in his 40s, later died in hospital.

Police don’t believe the shooting was random.

“He was such a good guy, he would do anything for anybody,” said a friend of Colquhoun’s who declined to be identified. “That just blows my mind because he died, I don’t know what happened.”

The victim was a regular at the motel’s bar, located in the 1800 block of 50th Street S.E., said the man, who knew Colquhoun for the better part of a decade.

Colquhoun’s friend said the outspoken man always had different coloured hair and was “one of the greatest guys” he knew.

Brenda Peebles said she witnessed the shooting in the bar’s VLT lounge.

She said the male gunman and the victim were having a verbal argument, and the victim was “towering ” over the shooter moments before the shooting.

The police homicide unit is investigating and an autopsy is scheduled for Monday. Police said they were still in the process of interviewing witnesses and a suspect description will be made available at a later date.

Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Calgary Police Service at 403-266-1234 or Crime Stoppers anonymously by calling 1-800-222-8477 or visiting www.calgarycrimestoppers.org.

If deemed a homicide, this would be the city’s seventh in 2018.
