Calgary’s Chomack notches 5th career ace

Calgary’s Nick Chomack is the founder and jack-of-all-trades for Nick’s Stix Golf, a small business that specializes in handmade copper ball-markers — a customizable gift for the divot-digger in your life — and wedge stamping.

On Saturday, on No. 14 at Desert Blume in Medicine Hat, Chomack didn’t require a mark. Instead, he buried his tee-shot, taking a little off an eight-iron from 159 yards out. That’s five career aces for the Silver Springs member — an achievement worth commemorating with a new marker to add to his own collection.

Eleven-year-old Charlie Gillespie will have a heck of a backto-school story. Gillespie’s dad dropped him off to enjoy a round with a buddy at Richmond Green and then received a phone call from his boy about an hour later. Charlie had just notched a hole-in-one on No. 4 at the municipal shortie, getting the job done with a gap-wedge from 99 yards away. Nice shooting, kid!

Curtis Walsh saved his shot of the summer for a perfect time. The Inglewood member aced No. 15 during the opening round of the club championships, smoothing a six-iron on the 175-yard challenge.

Also at Inglewood, Roberto Soza must be a big fan of the renovations on No. 10 — he was one-anddone on the new-look assignment thanks to a wicked wedge from 145 yards out.

Richard Doerksen, a familiar face around the rink as a longtime vicepresident of the Western Hockey League, was the toast of the clubhouse at Stewart Creek after an ace at the 2018 Hockey Alberta Foundation Golf Classic. Doerksen’s dandy was a flawless five-wood on No. 8.

Brenda Boake breezed through the second hole of HeatherGlen’s Hills Nine, hitting the target with her trusty seven-wood from the 152-yard blocks.

Alex Paterson made the turn in style during a recent spin at Canyon Meadows, acing No. 9 at the private club — site of Calgary’s annual PGA Tour Champions birdie-blitz, the Shaw Charity Classic — with a sweet six-iron from 193 yards out.

Scott McKenzie picked a perfect line with his pitching wedge on the fourth test at Beaver Dam, which measures 128 yards.

Dewey Berger and Geoff Boechler could have split the clubhouse tab after same-day aces at Kananaskis Country. Berger launched a fiveiron over the river on No. 15 on the Mount Lorette layout and was bang-on from 177 yards away, while Boechler was pin-seeking on the signature fourth hole on the Mount Kidd Course. Eight-iron was the right call on the 161-yard stunner.

Chris Shea didn’t require his putter on No. 16 at Blue Devil, instead finishing the 196-yard brute with one crack of a five-iron.

Also at Blue Devil, Mike Teasdale mastered the seventh hole with a gorgeous gap-wedge that covered 87 yards.

John Gretton made short work of No. 17 at Bearspaw, watching from 191 yards away as his tee-ball — a smooth six-iron — dropped four inches under.

Craig Pearn returned from a road-trip to B.C. with a story to tell. Pearn recorded an ace on No. 13 at Golden Golf Club, finding the flag with an eight-iron from 136 yards out.
