Police believe deaths linked, targeted

The Calgary police homicide unit is investigating what could be a triple murder.

Around 11 a.m. Tuesday, police found a dead woman at a residence in the 2000 block of Applevillage Court S.E.

Later, police found the bodies of a man and woman at a residence in the 10100 block of Hidden Valley Drive N.W.

Police say the incidents are believed to be related and not random.

They currently have one person in custody and are not looking for more suspects. They say there is no danger to the public.

Tuesday afternoon, police were guarding the home on Hidden Valley Drive N.W.

A vehicle was parked in front of the house with a window smashed out, and officers were examining the contents of the open trunk — what appeared to be personal belongings, including an inflatable mattress.

Neighbours say a middle-aged couple lived in the home, but that interactions were limited.

“They didn’t really interact much with anybody,” said the neighbour, who wouldn’t give her name.

Another neighbour who wouldn’t give her name said she saw about six officers arrive at the house earlier this morning, “as if something were about to happen.”

Officers have been seen scouring the property, coming and going from the back yard.

“The residents would come in and out almost every hour,” said neighbour Bryan Ng.

“In fact, when I see the garage open, I would stay inside until they go away. In my opinion, there’s suspicious activity.”

Ng said he believed the son to be the owner of the silver car seen in front of the residence.

Medical examiner officials took a body from the building in Applewood at about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Iftikhar Ali has lived on the ground floor of the building for more than 10 years.

He said he was up until after 2 a.m. watching movies and didn’t hear anything suspicious.

He didn’t know anything had happened until he left the building earlier Tuesday to find police cars and crime scene tape.

Jessie Rivas lives across the street with her family and two young children. Beside their house is a small playground where the neighbourhood kids like to play.

She said it’s disturbing to learn what has happened, but added there hasn’t been much police activity on the street in the two years she’s lived there.

“Mostly you wonder if you could have done something to prevent it, or seen something that could help,” said Rivas.

A couple who lives in the apartment building said it’s a quiet block, but they aren’t surprised to hear something has happened.
