Bystander describes arrest of suspect in alleged triple murder

- ANNA JUNKER

The suspect in a triple murder appeared to be waiting for police, said a resident of a southeast Calgary apartment who witnessed the arrest Tuesday morning.

The resident, who lives on the second floor of the Applewood apartment complex, said he watched the takedown at about 11 a.m.

“I heard screeching tires so, of course, I looked outside and I saw the first cruiser pull up and a bunch after him, and unmarked vehicles as well,” said the man, who asked not to be identified.

“They just got out and right away they got together as a group, put on their gloves, and I saw them go to the other side of the parking lot and in a formation, as a group.”

The witness said he noticed a man sitting on a cement retaining wall in front of the entrance to the apartments, drinking out of a bottle.

“I heard (police) say, ‘Sir! Drop the bottle now!’ And he said ‘F— you’ or ‘F— off ’ and then he drank again.”

He said another officer said something and the man dropped the bottle right away and stood up.

“The cops ran as a group and one of them put his hands behind his back and handcuffed him and put him into a van,” said the resident.

“It was like he was waiting for them.”

The resident said there were about 15 police vehicles surrounding the complex.

The resident added he has only been in the apartment for two days but hadn’t noticed anything out of the ordinary. “It’s sketchy. I could have bumped into him in the hallway here and never known.”

On the third floor, a Postmedia reporter saw the door to the apartment where the woman was found looked like it had been kicked in.

A lone police officer was posted outside the door, keeping watch.

Dustin Duthie is charged with three counts of second-degree murder.
