A man has been charged with the shooting death of 43-year-old Adam Colquhoun early Saturday morning, sources confirmed to Postmedia.

Ryan Oliver Reid Foster is facing a charge of second-degree murder.

Foster, 37, made a brief appearance via closed-circuit TV Wednesday before justice of the peace Deborah Hanly. Defence counsel Kim Ross, who has not yet been retained by Foster, asked that the case be adjourned to Thursday in provincial court. At that time it is likely the case will be adjourned for some time so Ross can get disclosure from the Crown and decide if he wants to schedule a bail hearing, which has to be done in Court of Queen’s Bench because of the nature of the charge. Foster did not address Hanly other than to provide his date of birth.

Colquhoun was shot inside the Town & Country Motel just before 1 a.m. Saturday, police said in a news release. Paramedics arrived soon after and a man could be seen being taken from the bar into the back of an ambulance. Police called it a targeted shooting.

“He was such a good guy, he would do anything for anybody,” said a friend of Colquhoun’s who declined to be identified.

The victim was a regular at the Town & Country and the Border Crossing bar in Calgary’s Forest Lawn, said the man, who knew Colquhoun for the better part of a decade.

Brenda Peebles said she witnessed the shooting in the bar’s VLT lounge. She said the male gunman and the victim were having a verbal argument, and the victim was “towering ” over the shooter moments before the shooting.
