Every day since Aug. 6, Kitty Mohan and her husband, Bij, have walked down the street to check their mailbox, and each day they ’ve returned home empty-handed.

Worried about her mail’s whereabouts, Mohan, who has lived in Riverbend for more than 20 years, asked Canada Post for an explanation.

“The local postwoman told me the community mailboxes in Riverbend had been vandalized,” Mohan said Tuesday. “I spoke to a representative from Canada Post (Tuesday) and he wasn’t very encouraging, in that he said he had recorded my concern and would get back to me by the 21st. To me, that’s not good enough.”

Mohan said she doesn’t know if she should be worried about her mail being stolen. “I phoned my bank manager (Monday), I was in a panic because we get statements regarding our financial transactions.”

She’s mostly upset she wasn’t informed the mailboxes would be closed until further notice, or whether the boxes had been broken into.

“We’re just frustrated because it seems no one is willing to take action. And to not report to us somehow through a little alert or anything is frustrating,” Mohan said.

The Mohans aren’t the only residents on Riverside Close S.E. who have noticed a lack of mail delivery recently. Neighbour Murray Schultz said he’s been waiting for a small package to arrive but started worrying when he stopped receiving mail.

“I noticed Kitty, my neighbour, coming from the mailbox two different days with nothing, and I figured it was strange because she always has mail,” said Schultz.

He spoke with a representative Tuesday morning and was told his request would be processed and he would later receive an email explaining where he could pick up his mail. He’s worried about not being informed about whether his mail was stolen.

When asked about missing mail delivery, Canada Post said in a statement it was aware of incidents of theft that occurred at mailboxes in southeast Calgary. Canada Post said the sites were secured and the incidents were reported to the company’s security and police.

Canada Post is in the process of posting letters on the community mailboxes to inform residents about the situation.

They are working to make the sites operational again, but did not specify when they estimate delivery will resume.

They said they are also working with police on efforts to deter and stop those who commit property crime.

“We take these matters and the security of the mail very seriously. Having said that, there is only one type of person that chooses to break the law — that’s a criminal, and they are determined regardless of the target.”

Canada Post said anyone who believes they did not receive a particular piece of mail should contact the sender.
