Three new schools open in city’s southeast

The ability to walk to class from home is now a possibility for students living in three new communities in southeast Calgary.

Schools will open in Legacy by WestCreek Developments, Mahogany by Hopewell Residential, and Seton by Brookfield Residential for the 2018-19 school year.

The schools in Mahogany and Legacy are both through the Calgary Catholic School Division. Legacy’s is a high school and Mahogany’s is for students from kindergarten to Grade 6.

“We’re absolutely thrilled for Mahogany’s residents,” says Scott Hamilton, director of marketing and customer experience at Hopewell Residential.

“It’s always so fulfilling to see a school open its doors in any community, let alone one that has been so warmly embraced by Calgarians from across the city.”

Divine Mercy Elementary, located on 228 Mahogany Blvd. S.E., has the capacity for 750 students.

“Mahogany ’s vision is — and has always been — an ambitious one,” Hamilton says of the community featuring Calgary’s largest freshwater lake. “We created the community with the idea that people from all backgrounds and stages of life could live in vibrant neighbourhoods that are all connected through incredible amenities.

“Schools are such a necessary and welcome part of that vibrancy,” he adds. “More than being convenient for residents, neighbourhood schools become an integral part of a community ’s social fabric and give the entire community a deeper sense of belonging across generations.”

In Legacy, All Saints High School, which has the capacity for 1,500 students from grades 10 to 12, is at 729 Legacy Village Rd. S.E.

“We’re really excited to have a school in the community,” says Kalida Goldade, marketing manager for WestCreek Developments.

“For our community members, it creates more of that full-living experience.”

“This high school is pretty exciting. It’s got a lot of different things to it,” she adds of its programs, such as extended French and a hockey skills academy.

Goldade says one of the most frequently asked questions at show homes is: “where are my kids going to school?”

“Legacy, itself, is designed for walkability ... a high school is part of the plan,” she says.

“The way that you hear builders and developers talk about the way they design communities and the way they design houses with such passion, one of the great things that we have had through this experience with the high school is listening to them talk about the new ways that they’ve designed the school,” Goldade adds. “They talk about it with that same level of passion.”

Another new school through the CCSD this year is in the northwest Calgary community of Sherwood. Blessed Marie-Rose, for students from kindergarten to Grade 9, is on Sherwood Boulevard.

The only new school through the Calgary Board of Education to open this year is Joane Cardinal Schubert High School in Seton.

Master-planned by Brookfield Residential, Seton is constructed on 283 hectares (700 acres) of land, and build out to 1.5 million square feet of office space and one million square feet of retail space. It also includes a large recreation centre, movie theatre and assisted living/nursing home, and will have between 6,000 and 7,000 homes.

“Seton is redefining urban living, giving residents the opportunity to work, live, play and now learn in their community,” says Tannis Anstey, Brookfield’s marketing manager, Calgary communities.

“The southeast sector of Calgary is the fastest growing area in the city and the school will be able to accommodate 1,800 students from Grade 10 to 12, with another four schools planned for the future,” she adds. “The plan for Seton was always to create a community that promoted healthy, fun and vibrant living, and places to learn are part of that vision.”
