Calgary moviegoers will soon have a chance to view their favourite movies in an extra dimension.

Cineplex, along with CJ4DPLEX, a world-leading 4-D cinema company, announced a new agreement that will bring the fourth dimension to a theatre near you.

Originally launched in Toronto in 2016, Calgary will host the next 4-D auditorium opening in coming months as Cineplex’s Chinook location undergoes a makeover.

The theatre will have seats that roll, sway, shake and heave in time with the onscreen action, much like a midway ride. The seats will also emit scents and warm air.

Beyond moving seats, fans mounted in theatre walls will simulate weather effects, such as wind, fog, rain, snow and even bubbles.

“Cineplex was proud to be the first company in Canada to pilot the technology, but we are even prouder to be the first to invest in a national rollout,” said Ellis Jacob, president and CEO of Cineplex.

“As part of this new agreement, Scotiabank Theatre Chinook in Calgary will be the first location to begin construction with the new, state-of-the-art auditorium. 4DX is a truly immersive cinema experience and we know Calgarians, and all Canadians, are really going to love it.”

Launched in 2009, CJ 4DPLEX brought the 4-D format to more than 550 theatres worldwide. The company says it will introduce 13 other Canadian markets in the coming years.
