- JONNY WAKEFIELD

EDMONTON Missing a puppy? RCMP in St. Albert may have found him.

Mounties say they turned up a small dog in a stolen Audi SUV which was involved in a series of break and enters in the city northwest of Edmonton Thursday.

RCMP Const. M-J Burroughs said the dog is being cared for at the Morinville Veterinary Clinic until police can find the rightful owner.

“(Puppies are) not something we commonly find when we’re recovering stolen vehicles,” Burroughs said Friday.

The series of events started Thursday morning after RCMP received a report about a number of break-ins in the Grandin Road and Levasseur Road area.

Officers arrived on scene and found a stolen Audi SUV with what is believed to be stolen property inside.

A police dog unit was called in to track a suspect from the stolen SUV. The trail took them to several backyards in the area before going cold.

In the meantime, officers found a puppy inside the SUV and determined he does not belong to the vehicle’s rightful owner.

Police say it’s unclear whether the puppy belongs to the unidentified suspect, or whether he was stolen from another home. They are asking for the public’s help identifying the dog ’s owner.

Anyone with tips about the break-ins can contact Crime Stoppers.
