“In loving memory ” reads a handmade sign placed at a makeshift shrine for a three-year-old boy, killed after being struck by a car in the city’s northeast Friday morning.

Emergency crews were called to Valleyview Road N.E. at 8:40 a.m. after the child was struck in what police have described as a “lowspeed incident” in a playground zone. The boy was originally reported in serious condition.

“Our understanding is that there was a Ford Focus that was travelling eastbound and as it did so, it struck a young child,” said Sgt. Colin Foster with the Calgary police traffic unit.

“We believe at the moment, the child was crossing the road going to a day home, but … we have not confirmed that yet. The vehicle stayed on scene … It just seems to be a very unfortunate collision.”

“The speed limit applicable to where the collision happened is the 30 km/h, there’s nothing to indicate … the vehicle was speeding at all. We are quite confident it was a low-speed impact.”

The child was with his parents when the collision occurred, Foster said, adding it doesn’t appear alcohol, drugs or speed were involved.

Anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to contact police on their non-emergency line at 403-266-1234.

The collision is the second fatal incident involving a young child and a vehicle in Calgary this week.

A six-year-old girl was struck and killed by a CTrain on Monday morning as she was crossing the train tracks at 162nd Avenue and Shawville Rise S.E.

A GoFundMe page launched to help the family with funeral costs identified the girl as Efua Isabella Ogbeide.

The fundraiser has already collected more than $23,000 of its $25,000 goal.
